What's going on in 1st Grade?
Students have regularly practiced and developed using the mouse and the track pad on the Chromebook to point, click, double click, as dragging while practicing letter/ sound relationships, 1:1 ratio, counting, and matching colors and shapes.
Students are also practicing logging in and out of the Chromebook independently. This takes a lot of effort and time because login is their first and last name spelled out with a period in the middle. In first grade, there is a strong focus on typing practice and developing essential word processing skills. As we move into the second half of the year, first graders will develop and improve their word processing skills by writing short sentences, using proper spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and word spacing with explicit instruction and guided practice. As students learn to type, the focus will be on proper hand position, rather than speed.
The last 5 weeks of school First Graders will be intorduced to coding through the program Scratch.
